Couples & Relationship Therapy
Couples Therapy in NYC for Every Relationship & Challenge
Whatever you’re dealing with as a couple, you don’t have to figure it out alone. All kinds of relationships, all kinds of problems.

Therapy for Every Identity & Relationship in NYC
We specialize in what most therapists weren’t trained to handle: queer relationships, open dynamics, kink, and the specific ways identity shapes intimacy.
Lived Experience
The therapists here are part of the communities they serve. Less time explaining yourself, more time doing the actual work.
Beyond Acceptance
You don’t need a therapist who’s “fine with it.” You need one who actually gets your relationship because they’ve lived something like it.
Every Relationship Honored
Monogamous, polyamorous, open, queerplatonic. We work with how your relationship actually works, not how someone else thinks it should.
Why Couples Start Therapy
Communication Breakdowns
When you keep having the same fight and nobody feels heard. The same triggers, the same reactions, the same dead ends.
Intimacy Concerns
Something shifted and the closeness isn’t there anymore.
Trust Issues
Something happened and trust took a hit, maybe a big one.
Parenting Differences
Different approaches to raising kids can become a constant source of friction.
Financial Stress
Money fights are rarely just about money.
Life Transitions
Big changes are shaking things up between you. A new city, a career shift, someone coming out, an open relationship conversation for the first time.
Conflict Resolution
Knowing you disagree is one thing. Knowing how to disagree without doing damage is another.
External Pressures
Families that don’t accept your relationship, workplace stress, the weight of existing in a world that wasn’t built for you.
Meet Our Couples Therapists
You’re trusting someone with the most private parts of your relationship. Our couples therapists are licensed (LCSW, LMHC, LMFT) and many are part of the LGBTQ+, kink, and ENM communities themselves. That lived experience matters. It’s the difference between a therapist who’s accepting and one who actually understands.
Training and credentials
Our couples therapists hold clinical licenses (LCSW, LMHC, LMFT) and have training that translates well to couples work. Several use somatic approaches and Internal Family Systems (IFS); frameworks rooted in attachment theory and relational trauma run through the whole team’s practice.
That matters in couples work — knowing what patterns to look for is different from just being comfortable with hard conversations. The team has worked with hundreds of couples on communication breakdown, intimacy gone cold, trust after a breach, polyamorous or open relationships, and the specific pressures of queer and mixed-orientation partnerships.
Everyone on the team also does continuing education in couples and relationship therapy. The approaches evolve, the research changes, and they keep up.
When the Bedroom Goes Quiet
A sexless marriage, or a sexless relationship of any kind, is one of those things people feel a lot of shame about but almost never bring up on their own. It’s also way more common than anyone thinks.
The thing about a sexless relationship is that it’s almost never just about sex. There’s usually something else going on underneath: resentment that’s been building, someone feeling unwanted or unattractive, exhaustion from kids or work, unresolved conflict that makes physical closeness feel impossible.
“Just schedule date nights” isn’t going to cut it when one person hasn’t felt desired in two years. Our therapists work with couples on the emotional and relational dynamics driving the distance, and on the practical side too.

Our Approach to Couples Therapy
Long-term relationships take real work, and sometimes you need someone outside the relationship to help you see what’s going on. At Blue Canary, both partners get to be heard. Not just the louder one or the one who’s better with words. Each session is shaped around what’s happening in your relationship, whether that’s the same argument on repeat, walls going up, or someone checking out entirely.
The work draws on Nonviolent Communication, Internal Family Systems, Gottman Method, and Attachment Theory. Not because we’re checking boxes, but because these methods get underneath the surface-level fights to what’s really going on. You’ll walk out of sessions with real tools you can use between appointments, not a vague feeling that you “talked about it.”

Couples Therapy
Where Is This Relationship Going?
Where do you want this relationship to go? That’s a bigger question than it sounds, especially when two people want different things or haven’t checked in about it in a while. Figuring out what you’re both working toward, and getting practical about making it happen without either person giving up what matters to them.

When Everything Blows Up
When things blow up in a relationship, it can feel like there’s no way through. Which is exactly when professional support matters most. Our crisis-trained therapists help you stabilize, get clear on what happened, and figure out next steps. Maybe trust was broken by something specific. Maybe it eroded slowly over time. Either way, we help you figure out what honesty and vulnerability need to look like going forward.
Getting on the Same Page
It’s easy to get so caught up in the day-to-day that you stop talking about what you want, individually and together. Part of that is learning to actually hear what your partner is saying, not waiting for your turn to respond. Worth getting concrete about:
- Figuring out what you both actually value (not what you think you should)
- Setting goals you’ll both follow through on
- Building regular check-in routines so things don’t pile up
- Making decisions together without one person steamrolling
- Handling the big transitions: moving, kids, career changes
- Keeping your individual goals alive inside the relationship

Sex & Intimacy Therapy
Sexual and intimacy issues are way more common than most people realize, but they just don’t get talked about much. Our sex therapists are specifically trained in the physical and emotional sides of intimacy. Evidence-based treatment for:
It’s a mix of talk therapy, behavioral exercises, and practical strategies. Everything stays within professional boundaries, and you set the pace for what you’re ready to talk about.
Relationship Patterns
How Your Attachment Style Shows Up in Fights
Ever notice how one of you pushes for more closeness while the other pulls back? Or how the same argument keeps happening no matter what it’s supposedly about? A lot of that comes down to attachment patterns.
Our therapists use Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and attachment-based approaches, because they work for getting past the stuck patterns.
Trust & Security
Jealousy & Insecurity in Relationships
Jealousy shows up in every kind of relationship, even ones where both people trust each other completely. Sometimes it’s obvious, sometimes it’s a low-level hum that makes you act weird and you can’t quite explain why.
It doesn’t mean something is wrong with you or your relationship. But if it’s driving your behavior or creating distance, that’s worth looking at together.
Our therapists help couples:
Marriage Counseling and Couples Therapy: What’s the Difference?
People search for “marriage counseling,” “couples counseling,” and “couples therapy” like they’re two different things. They’re not. The name is the only real difference, and even that depends on who you ask. If you’ve been looking for a marriage counselor in NYC, you’re looking for exactly what we do: sit with two people who are stuck and help them figure out what’s going wrong.
The term “marriage counseling” stuck around from when this kind of work was only for married people. Obviously not the case anymore. We work with partners who’ve been together six months and partners who’ve been together twenty years, married or not, monogamous or not. What matters isn’t the label on your relationship. It’s whether you’re both willing to come in for couples counseling and do the work.
Whether you searched “marriage counseling,” “couples therapy,” or “relationship therapist”? Same thing. Same work.. We work with all of it.

Further Reading
A few books tend to come up in conversations about couples work: Hold Me Tight for attachment-based couples therapy, After the Affair for the messy process of rebuilding after betrayal, and Tell Me No Lies for the everyday dishonesty that chips away at connection over time. Different books for different situations, and none of them are one-size-fits-all, but they come up frequently enough that they are worth knowing about. We keep a full list of relationship books if you want to keep reading.
